Be a leader. Become a Block Captain
What a better way to step up to the plate and to do your part to help others do their's.
Every block needs a captain. Become one on your block if you don't already have one.
This is the first step to strengthening your block and to become a whole. You can join the Philly
Blocks Network. You can apply on line at: www.phillyneighborhoods.org and click the button on
the left side of the screen that says Philly Blocks. At Philly Blocks you can also report block
problems, make online abandoned car reports, make confidential narcotics reports, make roll
call complaints for continuous patterns of crime, or you can even use the Municipal Directory to
find a city employee. You can do all this without even leaving the comforts of your home. Now of
course, not everyone has a computer in their home but, you can visit your local library and use
their computer free of charge. Library too far? Pick up the phone and call this number
(215)-685-3981 to find out how to become a Block Captain in your neighborhood.
Try making a relationship with your State Representatives Office, this could save you a lot of
time. Remember they are there to help you. You voted for them.
Did you know the city gives out awards for the cleaness block.
Neighborhood Appearance
Commit yourself to promote the highest possible standards of appearance and cleanliness to
your block. Everyone likes a nice looking block to live on. Well it takes work and not just from one
person either. It might just turn out to be a few people who do this so, don't get upset stay focused
keep your eye on the target. Try making a seasonal schedule and at the beginning or end of it have
a clean up. For example at the beginning of Spring have a block cleanup. Your next clean up
should start at the beginning of Summer. Now it's nice to have no cars on the street , that can't be
the case all the time. So don't let that slow you down. The little bit that you do for your block will
soon have a sounding effect. Did you know you maybe able to get trees for your block from
Fairmount Park Commission . Planting small trees can be beneficial to your block in a lot of ways.
They liven up our urban spaces, shade us from the hot sun, absorb noise, filter pollution and may
even strengthen neighborhood ties and reduce violence.
By creating such an atmosphere this will promote positive attitudes toward where you live. You not
only live inside but you live outside as well. Make it look good! If you don't care for where you live no
one else will either. Try calling The Street Tree Management Division Office The District Manager
phone number is (215) 685-4363 Their hours of operation are 7 am - 3:30 pm; Monday-Friday,
year round (except City Holidays) Or visit them on the web at www.fairmountpark.org
Need help, try going to your Neighborhood Counsel person or State Rep. They are their to help you.

Establish a relationship with your community officer
Every police district has a Community Officer assigned to that neighborhood. It is their
job to help you with any community problems that you may be having. If you are having
problems with someone or something that keeps recurring, try talking with your
community officer. He or she may be better equipped to deal with the situation at hand or
brain storm with you for a better solution. If necessary, make a confidential visit to where
the problem is happening. These officers are specially trained to take on situations and
defuse them.
Idea's to help you do your part.
